Qualcomm Launched W5 & W5+ Gen 1 Processors for Wear OS & RTOS

Qualcomm has finally launched its next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 & W5+ Gen 1 processors. The chipsets are specially made for wearable devices to produce maximum power by saving more energy. You can say it is built for Wear OS smartwatches that lack in many areas. Qualcomm has come with a W5 Gen 1 & W5+ Gen 1 SoC series like the smartphones series. There is nothing new to find in a name, but a new series of chips.

According to company officials, the new chipsets are 2x faster and consume half the energy compared to the previous Wear 4100+ chipset. In a typical scenario, the W5+ Gen 1 SoC saves 50% battery and takes 30% less space on the memory.

The W5+ chip over W5 also has a co-processor, which gives it a clear advantage. In the specifications, it supports Bluetooth 5.3, various health sensors, ultra-low power ambient, and enhanced hybrid architecture.

In terms of features, the W5+ Gen 1 has Cortex A53 cores and Cortex M55 efficiency core at 250MHz. It is packed with an A702 GPU clocked at 1GHz, and memory support for LPDDR4 at 2133MHz. There is also a new machine learning unit U55 in the processor.

The other W5 Gen 1 processor is intended to pack in cheaper watches like kid’s watches and other low-budget wearables. As per the company, Oppo and Mobvoi will first use these chipsets in their next watches. It is interesting to see the real-time results of these processors on Wear OS or RTOS watches.
